ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine provides clinical care at Tampa General Hospital across three sites (a Level 1 trauma center and two free-standing emergency departments), representing over 120,000 patient encounters per year with over 40 faculty members. Outpatient clinical services continue to expand in addiction and primary care sports medicine. The three-year USF EM residency program began in 2003 and graduates 10 residents per year with a board pass rate of 96%. USF EM is highly integrated into undergraduate medical education. USF EM operates a robust acute care research program and clinical, research, and education programs in EMS, Social EM, Ultrasound, Sports Medicine, Toxicology, Healthcare Administration Leadership and Management (HALM), and Simulation. USF EM provides post-graduate fellowship training in EMS, simulation, ultrasound, and HALM. USF EM faculty provide leadership for Florida Poison Control, City of Tampa Fire Rescue, Pinellas County EMS, TGH lnterfacility Transport/Aeromedical Services, CAMLS, and the Florida Center for EMS, as well as coverage of the NFL, NHL, and many local events.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Director of Research is responsible for the development, implementation, assembly and maintenance of personnel and infrastructure supporting contract negotiations for clinical research and sponsored projects in support of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Tampa General Hospital. The Assistant Director of Research leads strategic planning, goal setting, and implements of the infrastructure, processes and systems and responsible for is responsible for developing and providing an efficient and compliant environment to conduct clinical trials for an academic medical center to support efficient and high-quality clinical trials and research at the University of South Florida, Department of Emergency Medicine.
This position manages a team comprised of A&P employees and TGH employees. Works closely with various university stakeholders, including but not limited to USF's Office of General Counsel, Carlton Fields, Office of Technology Transfer, Sponsored Research, USF Research Integrity and Compliance (IRB, COi, Export Control), IT Security and the Office of Compliance & Ethics. Additionally, this position aids in supporting relationships and clinical research collaborations with the University's strategic partners, including but not limited to, Tampa General Hospital, and various sponsors and contract research organizations.
DUTIES:
Direct and manage the clinical, scientific, operational compliance, and regulatory aspects of clinical research and sponsored research related to the Department of Emergency Medicine and the TGH Emergency Department Clinical Research. Ensure adheres to all federal and state rules, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to clinical research compliance and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and OSHA standards; follows established policies and procedures and other relevant regulatory requirements by developing source documents and validation studies. Oversee day-to-day Research Operations, providing guidance and support to all shared resource users. Additionally, responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of department-sponsored projects and department research including federally funded clinical trials and non-clinical trials, industry supported studies, investigator-initiated studies, other faculty research, and support of the department education mission to facilitate resident and student research.
Provide supervision, development, training, and work coordination of the research staff within the Department of Emergency Medicine. Interviews, hires, schedules, assigns work to, and evaluates the work performance of employees supervised. Provide appropriate and timely information to staff. Supervise day-to-day operations to ensure that all studies are always FDA inspection ready. Provide coverage when needed as staffing needs arise. Collaborates with others involved in new study start-ups, including clinical nurses and investigators, and educates nurse managers about new studies.
Track and maintain reporting and financials (ie., Pl/Department/Division Activities, pending/enrolling/closeout of studies) for the Departments/Research Programs with mid-year and annual Executive Summaries, research reporting to the Department Chair/Vice Chair(s), Division Directors, and Senior Administrative Staff. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of clinical research coordination, administration, and fiscal principles and procedures; provides knowledgeable and expert support for the conduct of clinical trials. Serves as the central point of contact for the interdisciplinary team related to day-to-day clinical trial-specific operations.
Coordinate and serve as project lead for special projects and initiatives for the overall good of the project and/or grant. Responsible for coordinating, conducting, and evaluating research-related activities for assigned projects. Oversees screening, enrollment, and retention of study participants; coordinates study visits; ensures the quality of data collected throughout the research study; and implements the procedures and activities of the assigned study protocols, according to all applicable regulations and regulatory compliance, under the direction of the Principal Investigator. Prepare and submit documents to the Institutional Review Board(s) and other research review boards and committees as applicable and according to regulatory and institutional requirements. Compile and maintain regulatory files for assigned protocols. Coordinate, prepare for, and participate in monitoring visits, audits, and inspections.
Serves to strengthen relationships across the research enterprise through clear exchanges, both verbally and written. Display knowledge of scientific experimental design and protocol development procedures and the principles, methods, and procedures of clinical research. Perform a clinical and logistical review of protocols, collaborate with the study feasibility process, oversee the clinical activities related to new study start-up, and coordinate clinical trials when necessary. Initiative in developing special projects or finding solutions to identified needs.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of five years related exempt experience, including two years of experience managing exempt level employees.
FLSB1310 Equivalency:
4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Certified in Clinical Research with a reputable clinical research society. Experience working in a large or complex health organization. Experience leading clinical operations in pharma or contract research organizations.
