ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The Academic Advising component of the Office of Student Services in the College of Engineering is staffed by an assistant director, director, a team of professional advisors, and OPS/FWS support. Most advising services for engineering students and the administration of many student-centered programs are coordinated and/or administered in this unit. Statistical reports pertaining to enrollment, admissions, graduation, student demographics and evaluation of faculty teaching are produced to serve the research needs of college administrators.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is for an Academic Advisor II in the College of Engineering to advise students concerning their academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and other academic activities and career goals, to assist the student in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation. This position requires the knowledge and ability to coordinate and run retention support programs for students.
A successful candidate will possess an understanding of how students benefit from a developmental advising approach and will exhibit a high ethic of care and desire for student success.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Advises new and continuing transfer students in the College of Engineering. Facilitate registration and declaration of major for new FTIC and transfer students. Coordinate Orientation program and advise students at First Time in College (FTIC) and transfer orientations. This position will have significant responsibilities working with multicultural engineering students including first year student programs, outreach to academically at risk students. Will advise engineering students regarding university procedures and degree requirements.
Collaborates with college academic advising staff and academic departments across campus, and the other colleges at USF to advance the enrollment and productivity goals of the college and university. Monitor and requests adjustments to student records according to the academic guidelines established by the college and USF for degree completion. Evaluates IB/AP/CLEP scores and previous academic work of FTIC and transfer and preparatory/remedial students to insure proper placement in USF courses and to determine how course work can be applied toward satisfying academic work at USF. Communicates and clarifies the results of evaluation to individual students or potential students. Assist with and teach an engineering orientation course. Advise and support with at-risk students. Conducts small and large group sessions or classes with students to analyze progress toward completion of academic work requirements at the university, insures that students are properly informed regarding the specific requirements that must be met for graduation. As in the implementation of student centered events in the College including but not limited to orientation, graduation and student society events.
Coordinate and manage learning teams, and engineering learning communities as needed. Supervise up to 30 students. Manage learning teams and the engineering learning communities, summer programs, and Foundations of Engineering course (EGN 3000).
Perform other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities with two years of experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education. Work experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement for this position.
FLSB1310 Equivalency:
4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree.
